A thorough review of Bissell 1782 owner comments has provided the following likes and dislikes.
- Very good at picking up pet hair
- Attachments work well
- Great for house and car
- Not too noisy
- Respectable amount of suction
- Feels fairly durable
- Long recharge time
- No stand/storage unit for vacuum
- Nowhere to store attachments
- Cannot swap out battery
The majority of owner comments regarding the 1782 allude to its capabilities on pet hair. Folks with cats and dogs in particular have highlighted the unit’s solid performance when pulling up pet hair from carpet, sofas, cushions, etc. It is also able to vacuum up bird seed, kitty litter and other small debris. In addition, some folks have found the vacuum useful for doing a small set of stairs and car/truck interiors.
The bulk of owners seem pleased with the amount of suction produced by the vacuum and feel that the pickup is sufficient. Others really like that the machine is not noisy and that it is easy on the wrist due to its very light weight.
The length of time the battery charge lasts (vacuum run time) is something of a mixed bag however. Some owners feel it is sufficient while others do not. This is a fairly common occurrence when dealing with cordless vacuums - this run time satisfaction/dissatisfaction split. In an odd twist however there are quite a few owners who report run times longer – substantially longer – than the Bissell specifications for this handheld suggest. To be fair though, there are also quite a few folks who are getting run times on par with the machine’s specifications.
Quite a number of owners feel that the recharge time is too long and as a result several lament that you can`t swap out the battery. It is always nice to have a second charged battery on hand so you can swap it out while you put the depleted one on charge. In this way you can double the cleaning time of the vacuum. But the 1782 has not been designed with this capability.
There is also no stand in which to store the vacuum and no place for attachments (either on the vacuum body or off). This has annoyed some people.

Details & Specifications
This is a cordless vacuum that has been designed for households with pets, although it is still a good fit in any home with carpet and/or bare floors. It is also quite lightweight at only 3 lbs.
It comes with 3 tools (and a charger):
- Motorized brush tool (motorized brushroll helps capture embedded pet hair)
- Crevice tool (provides access to hard-to-reach areas and tight spaces)
- Upholstery tool (cleans soft surfaces and furniture)
The motorized tool is the key to pulling up the pet hair. It has a brushroll driven by an independent motor in the tool itself. The brushroll on many other smaller vacuums is driven by suction. A brushroll driven by suction can more easily bog down than a brushroll driven by a motor. As a result the motor driven brushroll has more effective pick-up capability.
Filtration on the machine is pretty basic and it has a 2 stage filtration system with a pleated filter. This is a standard filter and is not HEPA level.
The dust cup is easy to empty and it has a respectable volume of 0.6 liters. A button on the vacuum releases the dust cup.
Like many cordless machines the run time on the 1782 is somewhat contentious and some owners praise it while others criticise it. The run time, according to Bissell, is about 12 minutes on a full charge. This is about the same as most cordless vacuums in this price range, give or take a few minutes.
The vacuum is powered by a 14.4 V NiMH (Nickel metal hydride) battery. When fully discharged the battery takes about 5 hours to recharge. The unit comes with a battery charger, and a charge indicator light on the vacuum body will turn red during charging and turn off when the battery is fully charged.
While the machine includes a battery charger it does not include any kind of charging base or holder/storage base. In addition, there is no storage place on or off the machine for the tools/attachments.
The vacuum has a cleaning path width of 4.5 inches and an on/off button on the handle. It is also UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listed and it carries a 1 year limited parts and labor warranty.
