Black & Decker PHV1800CB 18V Handheld Vacuum Cleaner Review Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 December 2009

This handheld vacuum gets excellent consumer reviews, averaging about 9 out of 10.  It has powerful suction and a long lasting battery charge. Many people find it particularly useful on stairs and cleaning the inside of vehicles.  It is also a best-seller on Amazon.  [REF Black & Decker Vacuum Cleaner Reviews 2009]

A review of consumer ratings from several quality sites indicates that the Black & Decker PHV1800 is hitting the sweet spot with buyers:

 Source  Consumer Ratings  #Ratings
 Amazon  4.4 stars out of 5  97
 Epinions  4.5 stars out of 5  14
 Target  5 stars out of 5  13
Best Buy  5 stars out of 5  10

Vacuum Features
As the name states this cordless handheld is equipped with a powerful 18 volt motor, delivering 35 air watts of power.  It comes with two different power settings – a high setting for maximum suction and a lower setting to allow for extended battery time.  The PHV1800 uses cyclonic action which is touted by Black & Decker as a powerful spinning action that helps keep the filter clean thereby increasing the time between filter cleaning and ensuring better suction for longer periods.  The 3 stage cyclonic filtration is also purported to provide reasonably clean exhaust air (although there are no tests or statistics related to this feature).  The filter (model# PVF100) is also Dishwasher-Safe.

This Black and Decker 18v handheld has an integrated extension - the long nose at the front of the vacuum - that provides the ability to get into difficult to reach areas.  The extension has 10 different angle adjustment settings.  The vacuum also has the ability to fold in half allowing for compact storage and recharging.

Included with the Black & Decker PHV1800 are two attachments: A crevice tool – for reaching into narrow areas, and an upholstery tool.  Also included is a wall mountable charging base – although most consumers indicate they prefer not to mount this on the wall.   The battery charger is ENERGY STAR qualified.  This rating/qualification is appearing on more and more products these days and is often used to describe something as being more “environmentally friendly” but what does Energy Star rated really mean?  ENERGY STAR is actually a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy.  The program involves protecting the environment through energy efficient products and practices - so if a product is Energy Star rated then it has met strict energy efficiency guidelines set by both the EPA and US Department of Energy.  In theory this should help reduce energy use and thus energy bills.

Like most handhelds the PHV1800 has no bag and uses a dust cup (capacity 11.8oz).   When the dust cup is full you simply empty the dust and debris into the trash and you are good to go.  The B&D PHV1800 weighs in at just over 6lbs (2.83kg) and some consumers do comment that it is a little heavy.  The vacuum dimensions are approximately 18” x 7” by 7.5” and it comes with a two year warranty (not bad for an average price handheld).

A review of consumer comments on the net indicates the following common PHV1800 likes and dislikes:

PROS
- Powerful suction
- Easy to empty and clean (most consumers felt this way)
- Great for cleaning vehicles
- Compact
- Long-lasting battery charge

CONS
- A little heavy
- Loud
- Filter can be messy to clean (some consumers felt this way)

The following video allows one to see this handheld in action and to get somewhat of a feel for the machine and it’s features.  Granted it is a commercial but it is still helpful.  Black & Decker PHV1800 Video.
