Avg. consumer rating = 80/100

When deciding on a steam vacuum many consumers price the cost of having a professional cleaning company come in and do their carpets.  The pricing is often about the same as the price of the Hoover F7411-900 SteamVac Dual V Widepath Carpet Cleaner – if you can get a good deal on the vacuum then it is often less.  Granted that you have to do the work yourself if you own the cleaner but at least you can use it many times.  If you have the desire (and the energy) one of these babies is the way to go, and the Hoover F7411-900 gets pretty good marks from consumers.

Amazon reviewers give this Hoover steam vac 4.5 stars out of 5 (71 reviews), and 54 of the 71 reviewers (76%) gave this vacuum 5 out of 5 stars.  Reviewers at Epinions still like the machine but are a little less positive - 3.5 stars out of 5 (73 reviews).  NexTag reviews give it an average 4 stars out of 5 (4 reviews).  A review of online comments indicates the following patterns of pros and cons.

PROS

Powerful suction, easy to maneuver, does an excellent cleaning job

CONS

Loud, does not heat water (you have to add the water heated), water/solution tank stopper has issues with leaking, and general concerns about vacuum construction/durability

According to Hoover the vacuum has a myriad of features.  Including patented SpinScrub brushes which scrub carpet fibers on all sides in an effort to remove dirt.  The “Dual V Nozzle” configuration is purported to provide equal suction across the full width of the vacuum nozzle.  The F7411-900 uses an automated detergent mixing system that is designed to constantly provide the correct mix ratio of detergent and water.  The vacuum has two water tanks to keep the clean water and the dirty water separate.  It has several other features including an eight foot hose, removable tool caddy, edge cleaners and a 30 foot power cord.  The Hoover F7411 also has 3 speeds - spill pick-up, gentle scrub, and power scrub.  It should be noted that almost all reviews mention the powerful 12 amp motor (and many reviews indicate that the vacuum has very good suction and cleaning power).  The carpet cleaner measures approximately 20 x 12 x 44 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

I have frieze and berber carpet in my house and have read that you shouldn\'t use the rotating brush heads of a carpet steam cleaner on those type of carpets. I want to buy a carpet steam cleaner that either doesn\'t have the brushes, or one on which I can choose to disengage the brushes. I also would like the unit to heat the water, as some of the Bissell models do. I have used a Bissell ProHeat type and liked it except for the brushes which may harm the carpet. Can you suggest some models that meet these criteria, in the $100-$300 price range? Thank you
