 Avg. consumer rating = 87/100

The Hoover C2401 backpack vacuum gets fairly good reviews and ratings from owners.  Many feel that its efficient design reduces cleaning time and that the machine is something of a workhorse.  It is also considered by most to be quite comfortable to wear.  It comes with a HEPA filter and also excels on bare floors, but is not particularly good on carpet (no brushroll).  In addition, the unit comes with a reusable bag but this requires frequent cleaning and emptying.

Consumer Ratings
Consumer ratings were found on three quality websites and these can be found in the table below.  When averaged these result in an overall score of 87 out of 100.  As far as vacuums go this is quite good (see all ratings in our Vacuum Cleaner Finder), but we haven’t yet looked at many backpack vacuums.  We’ve placed this unit under our stick vacuums category (as we don't yet have a backpack category).

Consumer Insights
A thorough review of C2401 owner comments has provided some insights into the vacuum’s strengths and weaknesses and these are provided and discussed below.

PROS
- Great on hardwood floors
- HEPA filtration
- Very long power cord
- Has cloth dust bag but can use disposable bags

CONS
- Not so good on carpet
- Attachments are not great quality
- Reusable bag is messy to clean/empty
- Manual isn’t too helpful

One of the main areas of confusion with this vacuum is whether or not it is bagless.  This machine has something Hoover refers to as a “reusable dust bag” but it doesn’t really look like a bag.  Actually it kind of looks like a filter, and it frequently has to be cleaned (some call it a “shake-out cloth liner”). Thus the confusion.  See image below.

Hoover C2401 filter and bag

There are also a few consumer comments that this reusable dust bag is a little delicate so you will want to be careful when cleaning it or it can rip or tear.

In addition, many people have trouble getting the attachments on the end of the wand. This certainly seems odd as one would think this would be intuitive, but it does not appear so.  In an effort to determine how to place the attachments on the wand some folks refer to the manual, however the manual doesn’t provide any help in this regard.  Further down in this article you will find several steps and images provided by Hoover to shed some light on this issue.  Some owners have resorted to calling Hoover, but phone support apparently isn’t particularly good and there are sometimes long wait times.

Owners almost unanimously agree that the C2401 is well designed for cleaning bare floors, upholstery, ceilings, corners, etc.  But it does not have a brushroll and as a result it does not perform particularly well on carpet.  It does an average job on commercial, tight weave, low pile types of carpet but is very unsuitable for deep pile carpet.

There are also a few comments that the machine is a bit heavy and that it can be difficult to wear for more than about 10 minutes.  But these comments are in the minority and most feel it is fairly lightweight and comfortable.  Perhaps the weight could be an issue for a smaller person or for kids.

There are many positive reports from owners that this backpack vacuum has cut down their vacuuming time significantly.  Many of these reports come from people with cleaning companies or from people responsible for cleaning large areas like churches, theaters, etc.    The C2401 is sometimes referred to by these folks as a workhorse.

Other positive comments include that the vacuum makes cleaning much easier and that it is great for cleaning stairs.

Details and Specifications
The Hoover Commercial C2401 backpack vacuum has a hypercone filter made with HEPA media.  This is a good feature for folks with allergies or asthma.  A HEPA filter is capable of removing very small particles from the air and helps reduce the likes of tobacco smoke, dust mites, pet dander, pollen, mold spores, etc.  You can read more about HEPA filtration in our HEPA filter article.  The vacuum also has an external motor filter (non-HEPA).

In terms of filter maintenance Hoover suggests the following:
1) External motor filter: remove and clean weekly
2) HEPA filter: remove weekly and tap firmly against the inside of a trash receptacle to remove loose dust/debris

The vacuum also includes a 6.4 quart capacity “Dust Bag” or “Shake-out Cloth Liner” which is used to capture the dust and debris.  This is reusable but needs to be emptied pretty much daily (after every use), although you can see the debris through the clear dome lid.  If you don’t want to use the reusable bag (some folks don’t because they get tired of emptying and cleaning it) you can buy disposable bags that also fit this machine.

Most folks report that the unit is fairly comfortable to wear and Hoover states that the harness is chiropractor designed and approved.  It is made to reduce strain and increase productivity.  It also weighs in at 9.2 lbs which isn’t too heavy.

Wearing the Hoover C2401 Backpack Vacuum

Several attachments are provided with the C2401 (this is the 1.5 inch attachment kit). These include:
- 38" two piece straight metal wands
- 6" crevice tool
- 11" turbo floor tool
- 2" dusting brush
- 4" upholstery tool

The vacuum also sports a 60 inch (5 foot) hose with 360 degree swivel capability.  As previously mentioned, some owners report having difficulty connecting the attachments to the end of the wand.  We found a response from Hoover related to this issue.  This is their recommendation:

1) First unloosen this collar:

Attachments Step 1
2) Then attach the adapter and tighten like so:

Attachments Step 2
3) Tool should now fit in snug like this:

Attachments Step 3

We hope some folks find the above 3 steps useful, but given some of the issues getting the attachments connected it may not.

The power cord on this backpack is very long at 48 feet.  It is also a 3-wire quick change SJT cord which allows one to quickly and easily swap out the cord if required.

The C2401 has an 8.5 amp motor and produces 120 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of airflow (exhaust is out the back).  It is ETL and UL rated and carries a 2-Year Commercial Factory Warranty.
