Best Pet Hair Vacuum

A “pet vacuum” is generally a vacuum cleaner with an effective brushbar that is very capable at pulling pet hair from carpet.  It should also have sufficient suction to remove animal hair from hard surfaces and it shouldn’t clog easily. In addition, many pet hair vacuum cleaners come with one or more special attachments that excel at removing hair from carpet or upholstery.  These attachments are usually hand tools with air-driven brushbars.  There are many different vacuum models that claim to be good at dealing with pet hair and indeed many of them are, however some of these machines work better than others.

Our choice for best pet hair vacuum is the Miele Cat & Dog (model S7260).  The Cat & Dog has received top notch consumer ratings and is a well built, quality vacuum cleaner.  This bagged vacuum is manufactured in Germany and it uses a 2-fan motor that carries a lengthy 7-year warranty.  The brushbar is kept at an optimal cleaning distance from the floor surface via automatic height adjustment and a high percentage of owners comment favourably on the unit’s ability to pick up pet hair.

The turbo brush attachment is very good at vacuuming up hair from stairs, upholstery or vehicle interiors, and the unit’s sealed system construction ensures that all of the air entering the vacuum is properly filtered before being exhausted.  On board filters also include activated charcoal that helps remove pet odors.   There are many additional features on the Cat & Dog, however like most Miele machines it is rather expensive (about $650USD).  You may wish to read our full Miele Cat & Dog review.

Another top performing pet hair vacuum is the Dyson DC25 Animal.  Even though we found that the turbo hand tool for the Dyson DC25 Animal had only average consumer ratings, you just cannot argue with the plethora of comments that state the DC25 Animal is very effective at vacuuming up pet hair (for example see some comments on Amazon here ).

In addition, consumers (from multiple sources) rate this vacuum an average 9 out of 10 and it comes with a lengthy 5-year warranty.  It also includes HEPA filtration and lifetime washable filters.  It is less expensive that the Miele Cat & Dog but is still somewhat pricey at around $500USD (it can sometimes be found for slightly less).

The more cost conscious consumer may wish to consider the Hoover UH30600.  It can be found online for about $150 and it has a brushbar with on/off capability, HEPA filtration and an air powered pet tool.  Owners report that the vacuum is quite effective on pet hair and consumer ratings and comments are extremely good.

It includes several height settings, powerful suction and carries a 2-year warranty.  You can read more in our Hoover UH30600 review.

If you are looking for a simple and cheap handheld vacuum for dealing with pet hair then the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Hand Vac is a great choice.  You get very good pet hair removal ability in a handheld for about 30 bucks.  Like the Dyson this vacuum is rated an average of 9 out of 10 by consumers (and there are a large number of ratings to draw from).

It also sports a HEPA filter - something you don't see every day on a handheld.  It should be noted that this is not a battery operated unit, rather it is corded.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Some other vacuums that are noted to be effective at pet hair removal are provided below. These either specialize in pet hair removal or have had consumer comments indicating a high level of proficiency at removing animal hair. The list is not exhaustive of course but it may prove helpful.

Bissell Cleanview Helix (model 21K3).
Comments related to its ability to pick up pet hair can be seen here on Amazon.  It has a 2 row rotating brushbar and is also bagless.  In addition (like a number of other vacuums on the market) the 21K3 comes with HEPA filtration.  This vacuum costs about 100USD and comes with a 3-year warranty.

Miele Twist
The least expensive of the Miele S7 series but still a quiet, powerful and solidly built machine.  Not as good on pet hair as the Cat & Dog however.

Hoover UH30010COM
A very popular Hoover vacuum with all around good reviews.  It is also effective at dealing with pet hair.  It does not have brushbar on/off however.

LG LuV400T
An interesting machine with a host of features.  It also gets very good reviews and ratings and is Certified Asthma and Allergy Friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.  It also features a pet hair turbine tool.

Dyson DC17 Animal Review
Very good consumer ratings and solid performance when it comes to pet hair removal. Vacuum is best on carpet and only average on bare floors.

Eureka 3684F Pet Lover Mighty Mite Review
Inexpensive canister with good pet hair tool. Vacuum itself is good on hard surfaces but less so on carpet.

Bissell Lift-Off Bagless MultiCyclonic Pet Vacuum Cleaner Review
This upright has all the bells and whistles and comes with the pet turbo brush but there are some consumer comments that the brush is hard to lock in place.

Bissell 3920 Pet Hair Eraser Vacuum Review
Love it or hate it upright vacuum cleaner.

Dyson DC15 Animal Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review
A heavy vacuum cleaner that has stellar reviews but is older and getting hard to find.

Hoover UH50000 Windtunnel Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Upright with a pet hair tool that gets good reviews

Hoover S2220 Flair Bagless Upright Stick Vacuum Cleaner Rating
An inexpensive (about 50USD) stick vacuum that is reportedly good at picking up animal hair.  Though we wouldn’t expect this to be as effective as a full size upright or canister.

Do you have one of the above pet vacuums?  Is it good at removing pet hair?  Do you think another vacuum is better?  We encourage comments!

I don't know how this got on the "best" list. I bought one & it didn't even last a year. The turbo attachment stopped working after 7 months & now the dirt doesn't catch in the bagless canister but either in the filter or just blows out dirt everywhere. This vacuum cleaner is worse than the more inexpensive basic cleaners. I can't afford a Dyson so now I have to go buy another one less than one year purchasing this one.

I have the same problem with the PowerGroom which was highly rated a few years ago.

Agree with Michelle....Bissell Cleanview Helix makes a huge mess. I have dogs and the hair all gathers around the top filter, keeping all the rest of the dirt and dust with it. It makes a horrible mess when trying to dump the canister since once the canister is removed the stuff around the filter drops all over the place. I, too, have no idea how this machine has obtained such high ratings. It would be cleaner just not to vacuum!!!

Bought a Bissell Power Groom at Walmart last February. Best vacuum I've used. Attachments work great on furniture. HIGHLY recommend. Much better than the Shark Navigator my Mom bought me a few years ago.

What I want to know is, who has the best BELTLESS vacuum? Even if it's not as good as one with a belt! I'm so tired of having to struggle to get a new belt on my Wind Tunnel vacuum--and as I'm aging, it gets tougher and tougher. but seems like the vac is always sucking up something it can't swallow, and then the belt breaks.
