Best Vacuums 2016

We have collected all of our “best vacuum cleaner lists" for 2016 and put them on one page.  This includes bagless vacuums, bagged vacuums, uprights, canisters, stick vacs, lightweight vacuums, pet vacuums, cordless vacuums, vacuums under $100 and vacuums under $200.  Please consider that prices have been estimated from Amazon over the course of 2016 and have a tendency to go up and down.

Best Bagless Vacuums 2016

Best Bagless Vacuum 2016
These tables provide our 9 top picks for bagless upright vacuums as well as our 4 top picks for bagless canister vacuums.   All of these vacuums have received good ratings from consumers and they all excel at cleaning.  Many also come with great features and have respectably long warranties.

We’ve ranked these machines but we would caution that when buying any vacuum cleaner it is always important to consider your cleaning needs and your budget.  These vacuums have many different features and costs so determining which vacuum is best for you is more a function of your particular needs than the vacuum ranking.

Best Bagged Vacuums 2016

Best Bagged Vacuum 2016
The bulk of non-commercial vacuums manufactured today are bagless.  Bagless machines are extremely popular right now and we see bagless units like Dyson and Shark on TV ads daily.  However there are still a large number of quality bagged vacuums on the market.

The question of which approach is better - bagged or bagless - abounds on forums and blogs. However there is really no correct answer and it really comes down to consumer preference. Some people simply prefer a bagged machine because of the cleanliness of bags which can be removed, disposed of and replaced.  There is no exposure to the dust and debris as there often is when emptying the dust canister on a bagless unit.

Best Cordless Vacuums 2016

Best Cordless Vacuum 2016
Cordless vacuums have historically been plagued by weak suction and short run times. However, recent cordless machines have more power and we are starting to see run times of 20 minutes or more on a single charge. Also, some of the outliers are reaching run times as high as 40–45 minutes (while still generating effective suction levels).  We believe this will be the norm in the coming years. This is being driven not only by new battery technologies but also by the relentless demand for cordless vacuums. Homeowners like the light weight, maneuverability and portability of these machines.

Following is our list of the top 5 cordless vacuums on the market today.

Rank Manufacturer & Model Approx USD
1 Dyson V6 Absolute / V8 Absolute 400 / 600
2 Bissell Powerglide 1534 200
3 Shark Navigator Freestyle 120

Best Upright Vacuums 2016

Best Upright Vacuum 2016
Why would you want an upright vacuum?  Well traditionally speaking your upright, when compared to a canister, will have a wider cleaning path width, will more likely have a motorized brushroll (and therefore perform better on carpet), will have a longer power cord, and will have a longer cleaning reach (if you consider the power cord, hose and tools).  Is this true in all cases?  No, but it is true in many cases.

So what are our choices for the Best Upright Vacuums in 2016?  Following is our table of the top 10 uprights on the market today.

Best Canister Vacuums 2016

Best Canister Vacuum 2016
Why would you want a canister vacuum?  Well, they are much easier to move about than an upright where you have to move the entire bulk of the vacuum back and forth.  Also, given that the hose and nozzle are fairly easy to move, they are typically superior at getting under and around furniture.  In addition, if you are a big fan of an auto-rewind power cord you are much more likely to find this feature on a canister vacuum than on an upright.

You can see our list of the top canister vacuums in the table below.  Our choice for the Best Upright Vacuum in 2016 is the Miele Alize.  Top-notch consumer ratings, great performance and a lengthy warranty helped to nudge this unit to the #1 position. Miele is no stranger to our best canister list and has 4 machines in this year’s top 10.  All the vacuums below were chosen based on performance, cost, consumer ratings, features and warranty.

 Rank  Vacuum Cleaner  Approx USD
 1  Miele S8590 Alize  650
 2  Electrolux UltraFlex  400
 3  Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog  400

Best Lightweight Vacuums 2016

Best Lightweight Vacuum 2016
People often contact us and ask which good vacuums are lightweight.  This information is available in our reviews but you have to do some sleuthing to find the best lightweight machines.  So we put together our list of the best lightweight vacuums.

Why do people want a lightweight vacuum?  Consider a 20 lbs upright and a 3 level house.  Lugging something like this up and down the stairs can be a pain.  It is also especially problematic if you have injuries – like back, neck, wrist, shoulder, etc. Heavy machines also cause more fatigue and can be harder to maneuver.  There are many reasons why folks are often looking for a lightweight vacuum.

Following is a list of lightweight uprights that have achieved respectable consumer ratings.  Click on the links to see our detailed reviews.

Lightweight Upright Vacuums
 Model  Approx Weight (lbs)
 Dyson DC50 Animal  11.6

Best Pet Hair Vacuums 2016

Best Pet Hair Vacuum 2016
The USA is a very pet friendly society and many households have one or more of our furry friends.  So its no surprise that homeowners are on the lookout for a vacuum cleaner that does a great job at removing pet hair.

A “pet vacuum” is generally a vacuum cleaner with an effective brushbar that is very capable at pulling pet hair from carpet.  It should also have sufficient suction to remove animal hair from hard surfaces and it shouldn’t clog easily. In addition, many pet hair vacuum cleaners come with one or more special attachments that excel at removing hair from carpet or upholstery.
Today many quality pet hair vacuums also come with HEPA filtration and a sealed system (which ensures all the air entering the vacuums is passed through the filters before being exhausted).  Some even have active charcoal inserts that aid in reducing pet odors.

Following are our lists of the best vacuums for dealing with pet hair.

I found your page off of YouTube.
It's great but I'm still so overwhelmed.
I am torn between a dyson just because I know they have big brand recognition.
The house has mainly hardwood floors. Some area rugs.
A canister vac seems to be what I'm drawn too.
It has to be light weight.
So I don't know if that makes a difference between a canister or upright.
There are 3 levels to the house.
if you could please tell me in your opinion what vacume I could be narrowed down too that suits those needs.
Light weight, hardwood floors, bagless, if it's not bagless something that is easily cleanable.
That would be great!
Thank you!

Hi Jenn

Glad to hear you found us on YouTube. It's tough to pinpoint the best machine for someone without knowing them, their budget, or all their cleaning needs, but if you are drawn to a canister vacuum it may be a good fit. Canisters are also often a good fit for homes with lots of bare floor cleaning with the occasional area rug (which is as you have described for your place). I would say to check out some of the canister machines in our article on lightweight vacuums (see second table in the article):
