Miele started by making cream separators in the late 1800's. Headquarters are in Germany and the company has grown to have an annual turnover in excess of 3 billion dollars. Production of Miele vacuums began in the 1920's and today Miele vacuum cleaners are very well-known and the brand is synonymous with quality. They make stick vacs, uprights and canisters which frequently garner high consumer ratings. They are known for being powerful yet quiet and good for allergy sufferers and pet owners. They also feature prominently in our top vacuum lists.

Miele is famous for its quality bagged, corded canister vacuums, but they recently pulled a 180 with the new Miele TriFlex. The TriFlex is a stick vacuum that is both bagless and cordless. So, is this is a good vacuum cleaner? In our opinion - yes and no. The TriFlex is a sleek looking machine with a swappable battery. It’s quiet, it moves well, and the power will automatically adjust depending on the floor type. On the other hand it’s a bit on the heavy side (for a stick vac), the dust canister is small, and the brushroll gets easily tangled with hair.

The graphite grey Miele Blizzard CX1 Pure Suction is a bagless canister vacuum cleaner. It is powerful yet quiet, and the filters never need to be replaced. This is also a rather sleek looking machine and it is made in Germany. The Pure Suction is great on hard floors and it also very good at pet hair pickup. However, we wouldn’t recommend this for homes with carpet. The floorhead does not have a brushroll so this vacuum is best for homes with mostly hard flooring and limited areas of low pile carpet (and the occasional area rug).

The Miele Classic C1 Pure Suction canister vacuum is popular and it is a good fit for homes with mostly hard flooring – hardwood, tile, linoleum, etc. However the vacuum does not have a brushroll in the cleaner head so it is not very good at cleaning carpet. Owners like that the unit is made in Germany and that it quiet and has very powerful suction. They are also pleased with the variable suction feature that allows you to adjust the strength of the suction (6 settings). On the downside, the power cord is a bit on the short side and Miele vacuum bags are not inexpensive.

This is a simple Miele bagged canister vacuum without many bells and whistles, but it is also very reasonably priced and consumer ratings are top notch. Owners like the powerful suction, the auto rewind power cord, the quality fit and finish, and the quiet operation of the C1 Limited Edition. Also, the variable suction allows you to dial in the best power settings for the cleaning job. If you have mostly hard floors and some area rugs this vacuum is a very good fit. But beware - if you have mostly carpet then this is not the right machine to buy.

If you have smooth flooring - like hardwood, linoleum, stone, tile, etc., then the “Tech Blue” Miele Complete C2 Hard Floor canister vacuum is a great choice. This vacuum is getting mostly stellar reviews and ratings from owners and it comes with two cleaner heads. In addition, tools store on-board the vacuum for easy access and you get a retractable power cord and variable suction (6 power settings). This unit also has a fully sealed system which ensures high quality air filtration. However, the C2 Hard Floor is not the best choice if you have lots of carpet in your home. It is designed for smooth surfaces and some very low pile carpet and/or area rugs.

Miele is well known for manufacturing high quality bagged canister vacuums, but they recently jumped on the bagless bandwagon. In this review we look at the Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat and Dog - a bagless vacuum with some very unique and special features. The Cat and Dog has a self-cleaning filter system and a two debris receptacle design that keeps fine dust particles in one receptacle while moving larger debris to another. As a result, the large debris receptacle can be emptied without that annoying (and sometimes allergy/asthma inducing) puff of dust. Owner ratings are quite good but the unit is expensive.

Miele makes a great bagged canister vacuum but can they build a good bagless machine? The short answer is YES. The Blizzard is Miele’s first foray into the bagless vacuum market and they got most of it right. The Miele Blizzard vacuums are getting solid reviews and have many of the same great features seen on their bagged units, such as an auto rewind power cord, variable suction, and very quiet operation. The Blizzard CX1 Turbo Team includes 2 cleaner heads and is designed for bare floors and low pile carpet. It’s capable on pet hair and has an ingenious way of reducing dust exposure when emptying the dust canister.

The marine blue Miele Compact C2 Electro+ is a lightweight, bagless canister vacuum that is capable on all manner of flooring - from smooth surfaces to low, medium, and even deep pile carpet. This is a great all-rounder machine that is manufactured in Germany. Owners really like the powerful suction, the low noise output, and the top-notch air filtration capabilities. However, the carpet cleaner head is a little on the bulky side, and the tools, which are attached via a clip to the hose, can sometimes get knocked off.

The Complete C3 Marin bagged canister vacuum is made in Germany and is one of Miele’s top-end machines. It has a host of features and can handle most any floor type. It includes two floorheads: The Electro Premium Floorhead and the Parquet Twister Floorhead. In addition, it has an automatic suction setting that adjusts suction depending on the flooring – so you don’t have change it manually. The Marin has top notch filtration, so much so that it is essentially a mobile air purifier. It is also extremely quiet and capable at pulling up both cat and dog hair. The powered floorhead is on the heavy side however, and this vacuum does not come cheap.

The Miele Complete C3 Calima is an introductory-level C3 canister vacuum. However the C3’s are the top end of Miele’s canister stable so there are still plenty of great features on this machine. The Calima includes 2 cleaner heads – one specially designed for bare floors and the other for carpet/area-rugs/smooth surfaces. The unit also has sound dampening insulation, variable suction, a retractable power cord, and HEPA-level air filtration. This vacuum is not the best choice for medium to deep pile carpet however. It excels on bare floors, area rugs and low pile carpet. The Calima is manufactured in Germany.

The blue Miele Twist upright vacuum has been replaced by the obsidian black Miele Dynamic U1 Maverick. The Maverick is pretty much an entry level Miele upright and it does not have some of the bells and whistles you will find on the more expensive uprights – such as LED headlights, a HEPA filter, turbo brush tool, etc. Even so, owners are pleased with the vacuum’s variable suction feature (great when cleaning delicate materials), lengthy cleaning reach, and sealed body. They also feel the unit has strong suction. However this is a heavy upright and some people find it difficult to lift and move around. In addition, the hose, while a decent length, is hard to stretch out.

The Miele Compact C1 Turbo Team canister vacuum is a smallish bagged machine that is designed for low pile carpet, area rugs and smooth flooring. Consumer ratings to date are very good and owners love how lightweight yet powerful the vacuum is. Folks are also pleased that the Turbo Team is very quiet. This is more or less an entry-level Miele canister and it is part of the Compact C1 series of vacuums. It is important to note that the Compact C1’s do not have motorized floorheads so they do not perform well on deeper pile carpet.

This mid-range Miele canister vacuum is getting very good reviews and ratings from owners. It is hard to find much in the way of faults with this machine. It is capable of handling low, medium, deep pile and soft/plush carpet as well as bare floors, and it is even good at pulling up pet hair. Owners are thrilled with how quiet the unit is and also the variable suction controls. It is made in Germany – a rarity these days – and it feels sturdy and durable. Probably the biggest issue with this canister vacuum is the cost - it doesn’t come cheap.

The Miele Compact C1 Pure Suction is an entry level Miele canister vacuum and is at the more affordable end of the Miele vacuum spectrum. Consumer ratings to date are quite good and most owners are pleased with their purchase. There are some folks that are not happy however. The key with this machine is to know what you are buying. The Miele Compact C1 Pure Suction is a compact vacuum so don’t buy it if you have a large area to clean - it is best for smaller homes or apartments. Also, it is not designed for medium or deep pile carpet. It works well on bare floors and is also capable on low pile carpet but if you have deeper pile carpet you will be disappointed.

The Miele Complete C2 Limited Edition canister vacuum is a favorite with owners. It gets very good ratings and comments and is a great fit for homes with bare floors, low pile carpet and some area rugs. The machine is not such a good fit for those with deeper pile carpet. It is a quiet, well built vacuum with variable suction and an auto-rewind power cord. However genuine Miele bags are not cheap and some folks feel that the power cord is too short resulting in the need to frequently plug and unplug the vacuum when moving from one area to another.

The Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog Canister Vacuum Cleaner gets excellent ratings and reviews from owners. It is also an attractive, well-built machine. Consumers praise the unit’s quiet operation, ability to pick up pet hair, strong suction and robust filtration features. It also comes with separate cleaner heads for carpet and bare floors, and the carpet tool is motorized so it is capable on low, medium and high pile carpet. This is an expensive vacuum cleaner however and at most retail outlets it will set you back over $900.

The Alize is a fantastic canister vacuum but it is important to understand what you are buying before you purchase. Miele makes a wide range of canister vacuums each with a host of different features and attachments. The Alize is a great machine for cleaning smooth surfaces like hardwood floors, tile or vinyl. It is also effective on flat weave rugs and low pile carpet. However with its existing set of attachments it may not be the best choice for homes with lots of carpet (especially medium to deep pile carpet).

The Miele S2121 Delphi canister vacuum is designed for bare floors and low-to-medium pile carpet. It has recently been renamed to the "Miele Classic C1 Delphi Canister Vacuum Cleaner". It is now blue in color but otherwise the same machine. It has variable suction as well as a host of other features. In addition, high consumer ratings suggest that it is indeed well-liked by its owners. The vacuum is also quiet, lightweight and not too large. However, it does not come with a specialized bare floor tool (like its more expensive brother, the Titan) and some owners feel this is a drawback.

Let's cut to the chase. The Miele S6270 Quartz is a great vacuum IF you have lots of bare floors to clean and a few area rugs or a small amount of low pile carpet. It is not the best machine for a home or apartment with lots of carpet - especially medium to high pile carpet. The floor tool has no brushbar which limits its performance on deeper carpet. Aside from this the Quartz is lightweight, very quiet and powerful. It also has effective filtration, variable suction and is well built.

Designed for 20 years of residential use, the Miele Jazz (recently renamed the Miele Dynamic U1 Jazz) gets very solid ratings from consumers. Like most machines from this German manufacturer the Jazz is expensive, but it does deliver. Powered by a 1200 watt ultra quiet motor, it has very strong suction and does an excellent job cleaning carpet and bare floors. It also includes 3 levels of filtration and the HEPA filter with activated charcoal ensures fresh smelling air free of most allergens. Some consumers find the machine a bit heavy however and consumables like bags and filters are not cheap.

The Red Velvet (model S6270) is part of Miele's latest series of canister vacuum cleaners, the S6 series. The Red Velvet is rather unique with its soft red velvet finish on the canister surface. The vacuum is best suited for smooth flooring and low pile carpet as the brushes in the nozzle are air-driven. It also includes an AirClean filter, several attachments, a stainless steel telescopic wand, suction controls and a 7-year warranty on the motor and vacuum casing. Consumer ratings, while few, are very good.

The Miele Quickstep S194 is Miele's latest stick vacuum and while consumer ratings are few, those that are available indicate a respectable level of satisfaction. Owners praise the Quickstep's power, quiet operation and ability to pull up pet hair. Some do find the vacuum a bit on the heavy side however. It should also be noted that this stick vacuum is best for hard floors and low pile carpet. Like most stick vacs it is not intended for deep pile or plush carpet cleaning.

The Miele Capri is the latest addition to the popular S2 series of canister vacuum cleaners. It is a step up from the more affordable Olympus as it has both carpet and bare floor tools (as opposed to a combination tool) and it gets very good grades from consumers. Owners praise its powerful suction and also like that it is lightweight and quiet. However like all of the machines in the S2 series the power cord is a little short. (2017 Update: This is now called the Classic C1 Capri and ratings are still top-notch.)
