In this review we look at iLife’s flagship A-series robotic vacuum, the A8. This machine has impressive navigation which works very well in large open areas. A 90 minute run time helps the unit cover a large area and the slim profile makes it able to get under low furniture. In addition, owners are pleased that the A8 has a MAX power mode and also an edge cleaning mode. However, the systematic navigation is sometimes rendered ineffective in areas with lots of obstructions like tables, chairs, etc., and we wish the A8 came with a means to create “no-go” areas. There is no magnetic tape and there are no blocking beacons.

We don’t review a lot of robotic vacuums but the Evolution Robotics Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner is getting good reviews and it can be found for under $200 at some online retailers (it is also a best-seller on Amazon).  As such, it warrants a look.  It should be pointed out that this is not a “vacuum” but rather a robotic sweeper and mopper.

The iRobot Roomba 560 is the third generation of Roomba and is one of iRobot’s “middle-of-the-road” models.   iRobot indicates that there are many improvements over previous models.  Consumers seem to like the product but also indicate that, while it is a step forward, it still has some issues.

Avg. consumer rating = 80/100

The iRobot Roomba 410 is an entry-level robotic vacuum cleaner with a host of features.  For the uninitiated, robotic vacuum cleaners are small, often disc shaped, battery operated vacuums that scour the floor vacuuming up dirt, hair, lint and the like using some computer means of navigation.   The 410 utilizes counter rotating brushes and a vacuum to pick up dirt (these brushes routinely have to be cleaned so they are hand-removable).  It does not use any kind of bag and the dirt is captured in a “dirt cup” – which iRobot claims is very easy to remove and empty.  Also, an interesting note is that its sensors and programming are set up such that the Roomba 410 covers every area of the floor an average of four times during a given cleaning session.

In the 1950’s the house of the future was portrayed as having all sorts of “space-age” gadgets.  While many of these concepts never reached fruition (50+ years later…), we are beginning to see some of these concepts emerge.  The idea of robotic domestic help is beginning with items such as the now very popular robotic vacuum...
