Consumer Insights
A thorough review of owner comments provides the following D4 likes and dislikes:

PROS
- Long cord
- Long hose
- Very good on both carpet and bare floors
- Capable on pet hair
- Quiet
- Strong suction
- Large bag
- Solid warranty
- Canister moves very well
- Motor speed control on handle

CONS
- Expensive
- A bit on the heavy side
- Some owners feel it is bulky

Many owners report the D4 is very effective on both carpet and bare floors.  Much of this is often attributed to the vacuum’s quality build.  As a matter of fact there are quite a few comments from owners saying that this is the best vacuum they have ever had.

The canister on the D4 is praised for its mobility.  It glides across both carpet and bare floors and doesn’t tip.  However it does appear to stumble on bare surfaces when trying to move over its own cord.  It just seems to get stuck and folks have to pick it up and move it over the cord.  This is frustrating for some.

Owners are very pleased with the exceptional cleaning reach of the vacuum.  The combined length of the power cord, hose and wand result in the ability to clean room after room without having to repeatedly unplug and plug-in the machine.

SEBO D4 HandleBy-and-large owners have mostly good things to say about the SEBO Airbelt.  Additional popular comments include that the air bumper works well, having suction controls on the handle is really nice (see image to left), the vacuum produces strong suction, operation is fairly quiet, and that the vacuum bags are respectably large.  There is also a comment about how very good SEBO support is and that is encouraging.  Although it should be pointed out that authorized SEBO dealers are not always easy to find and for some of the consumables/parts, if you live in a rural area, you will likely be relying on online sources.

There is some discussion about whether this vacuum is heavy or light.  Some talk about how lightweight the D4 is while others report it is heavier and bulkier than most other canisters.  In terms of weight it may be more a matter of what one is used to.  We’ve found the weight of this machine (in the neighbourhood of 17-18 lbs with handle) to be a little on the heavy side when compared to many other canister vacuums on the market today.

The power on the main vacuum nozzle, the ET-1 Power Head, has to be turned off via a switch on the power head itself and this has caused some grumbling among owners.  Many would have preferred this ability built into the handle.  If you are moving from carpet to a delicate area rug for example, you have to bend down to manually shut the power head off then turn it back on when you go back to regular vacuuming.

Also, a few folks feel that the crevice tool is on the short side and would have preferred a longer crevice tool or even an additional extra-long crevice tool.

Following is a short video by SEBO showing the D4 vacuum features.  It is quite good but remember that it is essentially a commercial.

Details & Specifications
The D4 has S-Class filtration meaning that it removes 99.9% of particles 0.3 microns or larger in diameter.  HEPA level filtration generally provides removal of 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger.  For the average consumer the difference between S-Class and HEPA filtration will be negligible.  Both offer very high levels of filtration and are good for those suffering from allergies or asthma.  In addition, the D4 has sealed filter gaskets and sealed construction.  These features ensure that all the air entering the vacuum gets filtered before it exits the vacuum – nothing bypasses the filters or leaks out of cracks or seals before being filtered.  Filtration in the D4 occurs in 3 stages.  The multi-layer dust bags, the S-Class pre-motor filter, and the S-Class exhaust filter.

The dust bags that fit this machine are quite large and have a capacity of 1.5 gallons.  They can also be sealed/capped when they are full, so no dust escapes into the air during bag removal and disposal.

The “Premium” version of the SEBO Airbelt D4 is available in black or white and it comes with the 12-inch-wide ET-1 Power Head (if you are buying the non-premium D4 it comes in red and has an optional 15-inch wide Power Head).

The ET-1 powerhead has four levels of height adjustment, is designed for both carpet and bare floors, and has 180 degrees of motion making it very maneuverable.  An interesting feature on the power head is the indicator light which tells you if the height setting is too high for optimal cleaning or if the brushroll bristles are too worn.  The brushroll can be shut off via a switch on top of the unit.  With the brushroll off it is good for delicate area rugs and bare surfaces.  The brushroll can also easily be removed for cleaning and maintenance.  In addition, the brushroll will shutoff if it is obstructed – to save the motor.

The D4 Premium also includes a parquet floor brush, a crevice nozzle, a dusting brush (made with horsehair bristles), and an upholstery nozzle. The parquet floor brush has soft bristles that ensure gentle cleaning.  This brush is designed for cleaning surfaces like tile, linoleum, hard wood and other bare surfaces. The crevice nozzle, dusting brush and upholstery nozzle all store on-board the vacuum.

The D4 has a 40 foot power cord and a 7 foot crush-proof hose.  With telescopic wand and handle the machine sports a full 52 foot cleaning reach.  This is quite exceptional for a canister vacuum and not something we see often.  The power cord also has auto rewind – a popular feature.

The canister body isn’t really what we would call lightweight at 15.9 lbs.  You can also add about 1.5 lbs for the vacuum handle.  The canister does glide nicely across the floors however and it has 4 easy-glide casters with rubber coated wheels.

The airbelt bumper is a rather unique feature and is a soft, cloth covered foam bumper around the perimeter of the canister.  This bumper protects furniture and walls from marks or scuffs. It also helps diffuse the exhaust air and reduce the noise level of the vacuum.

There are many additional features on the SEBO D4 including a bag full indicator, +/- suction controls on the vacuum handle, and a suction power indicator.  The machine also carries a lengthy seven-year warranty on the motor and a five-year warranty on non-wear parts and labor charges.
